Jock - interesting point of view you offer.

Afraid my view is a bit different. I would say the kitchen is at the rear of the house. In PM, as the D's are looking down on the house from the woods as the crowds are gathering for the big GA hunt, the door shown there, which is at the end furthest away from the kitchen, is what I call the Front door. The garden door is facing east, facing the boathouse, the kitchen door is facing west, facing the pigeon loft and stables. I am not aware of any other door on that side of the house. The long dimension is roughly in a North/South line, as you described it.

As to the "first floor" definition enigma, just today I was at the local hospital for a brief checkup, and noticed the elevator had buttons for "G", "1", and "2". When I got ready to leave, I pressed "G" and got off at the level of the ground. Egad. Such blatant disregard for all things holy. How did that labeling style ever get into here? This is Kentucky for goodness sake. The "first floor" is supposed to be the FIRST FLOOR one accesses coming in from the ground, but no, this elevator wanted to take me UP from the GROUND to the FIRST FLOOR, making a total mockery of just what is meant by "FIRST". Let us say, I was a bit surprised with that discovery.

Razzlefratz...

"Kerfuffle" - better go look that one up. That's a new one...

The things we learn by chasing All Things Ransome.
