In the same book, Chapter II, in the picture: "A great improvement to the house", the upper window is clearly a casement type. Maybe the sash type appearance in "Getting In" is the abberation. Or maybe an attempt to show moonlight reflected in the glass ?
Also, there is a window upstairs in the gable end, but it is referred to as a window providing light for the staircase: "Looking back from the Beckfoot gateway, they saw lights in the window that lit the staircase, and this time not a reflection of the moon." Ch XIX, towards the end.
So maybe the end room did not go all the way to the end of the house, but was cut short to accommodate the staircase ?
