An example of this, a while ago, was the claim that Mrs Blackett's memory of figure-skating on the ice (WH, p. 87) involved the ordering of the 'servants' to remain in the house. The text gives no indication of this, either way, but to me the 'feel' of the family, as portrayed and exemplified by Ransome, indicates that things were done in a fair, reasonable, free-thinking way (unless the G.A. was in charge).

It has been postulated on TarBoard that the GA brought up Molly Blackett and James Turner at Beckfoot and that this to some extent explains why they are so deferential to her.

The GA does not regard the cook (in PM) to be a suitable person to look after her great nieces. This and other evidence regarding the way the GA treated the Beckfoot servants rather suggests that the pre WW I GA would not have wanted to take the servants skating with her, but would have had a servant in attendance during the skating party for the purpose of conveying messages to the house.
