Maybe as some have surmised, the Turner family had once been quite wealthy, but someone (the GA's father ?) had lost quite a bit of the family silver (South Sea Bubble anyone ?) and the GA tried valiantly to live up to the standards which had been experienced previously.

That sounds possible, but far more likely is simply that she lived in a part of society that still expected those standards. This would involve no more than modest bourgeois wealth, nothing extreme. Remember too that the GA is used by AR as a figure of threat and fun- a useful plot device. She could easily have been based in real life; for instance my Victorian granny was a little bit like her, and she'd been brought up in a religious sect in Cape Province and was a bit of a formidable figure when I knew her. However she was quite old fashioned, a sweetie underneath and my dad teased her ruthlessly. I never saw her play tennis.
