Peter Ceresole's 'Victorian granny' sounds very like Emma Holt, who was the visual model for the Great Aunt. Miss Holt dressed in an old-fashioned, totally Victorian, way, and you had to mind your Ps and Qs when you visited her. But I stress 'visual' because Emma Holt was gentle and sweet-natured and utterly different from the G.A. in the way she behaved. For me, the best description of EH is in George Melly's book Scouse Mouse.

I agree that the G.A. is a 'useful plot device' and I would go further - I think she is a brilliant creation by AR. This character can inspire fear in both children and adults and completely disrupt their plans merely by her presence and without issuing any real tangible threat. AR was particularly good at creating plausible 'villains' - one thinks of George Owdon (a convincing would-be smart-alec) and Squashy Hat (an ingeniously conceived mistake). I am fond of all AR's villains, except Jemmerling who seems to have no likeable qualities whatever, at least I haven't found any yet. The scene in GN? where Capn Flint clears Jemmerling off his boat could be regarded, in TarBoard terms, as a piece of 'toffishness' by CF, but isn't it magnificent? I suggest that toffishness is not all bad.
