Peter Ceresole's 'Victorian granny' sounds very like Emma Holt, who was the visual model for the Great Aunt. Miss Holt dressed in an old-fashioned, totally Victorian, way

My gran, Lydia, always wore a brilliantly white, spotless choker and rather sheer soft, simple dresses. Decades later, I now realise that even when I knew her at the age of 80 or so, she still had a terrific figure. Her hair (also brilliantly white) was done up in a bun.

As you say, totally Victorian.

As a young girl, she had trekked with her family in ox waggons, north from the Cape. She described to us how they would camp up in a circle in the veldt, and she'd listen to the wild animals as they sniffed around them in the night. Our favourite story was the crossing of a river in flood. She was sitting on the luggage. As the waggon rolled down the bank, the water rose through the bottom boards, and she raised her feet to keep them dry. Then she could see the oxen start to swim as the water got deeper. It was always slightly hard to reconcile this high adventure with the spotless chokers.

Maybe the relationship between the GA and Captain Flint was more direct than we might at first imagine?
