I think the argument that the Blacketts are upper class (or 'toffs') has been raised long ago, and can be found in Ian's dusty old shoe box!
The ownership of Beckfoot is interesting - the impression is always given that it 'belongs' to Nancy & Peggy's mother, yet, and this has only just occurred to me, whenever the GA makes an appearance she behaves as if she owns it. If I remember correctly she's a Turner hence Mrs Blacketts deference (widowed and allowed by the generosity of the GA to stay in the family home to raise her children). But... if the GA does own it why not live there (I know it wouldn't make for such interesting novels, but then we are way past the concerns of the novels now!)
As for the GA's treatment of the cook, this might even indicate she is not even middle class!
Does it matter? Yes and no, if only because AR put so much of his own life in the books and there are areas of his life we do not know so all we can do is glean what we can from we do have.
