Captain Flint's need to be left un-disturbed to write will ring bells with anyone who has children (their own or other people's) about and is trying to write.
It also fits well with AR's irascibility with the children of his friends the Altounyans during the summer which led to the writing of SA. His request that no children come to say goodbye, and his subsequent apology when presented with the Turkish slippers, matches the conduct of Captain Flint with John and the Amazons, but raised, as is the way with fiction, to a higher and grander plane.
