Nice piece of history, Alan.
However, my understanding is that pigeon racing was a very popular pastime/sport in England then and now, so AR would have been well aware of it.
Keeping pigeons was not too expensive, compared with, say, a greyhound, and didn't need so much dedication, such as daily training exercise.
