Yes, Jock, I could not possibly disagree with anything you say, but your terminology is striking: you talk of 'depth' and 'research' and 'issues' and 'value', but you do not mention 'magic', ie the sheer magic of AR's stories. Admittedly it is hard to express in words, but for me that is by far the most precious aspect of AR's work and the most vulnerable. Compared with that, 'researching the 1930s' is pretty dull stuff.
