Peter, I agree that what brings us back to AR time and time again is hard to express in words, but I see AR's 'magic' as totally immune to our amateur tinkering.
It a bit like a religious person viewing the natural sciences as a threat. 'If you can explain everything in terms of protons, neutrons and electrons what need is there for religion?' But, in fact, the further the march of science progresses, the more we realise that we don't know.
It's the same with AR. The more that we work to try understand him and the world that he was writing about, the more questions we want to ask. For me, the magic never fades.
