Jock - you have just used the phrase 'message board' - this assumes, does it not, that there are messages on it? Those messages are derived from, and passed on from, all our respective readings of AR's text.
Does the message board that you are reading have a thread called 'the Miss Nancy enigma' ? I started this thread, on the basis that AR, by putting 'Miss Nancy' into the mouths of some characters but not in the mouths of others, was conveying a message about class deference in the Lakes at that time. He may not have intended consciously to convey this message but, whatever, the message was received loud and clear by many TarBoarders, including both your goodself and yours truly. AR could have avoided sending any such message by having Mrs Dixon simply say 'Nancy'.
I am interpreting 'message' as the passing on of information from one person to another.
