I wonder at the economic importance of the sheep Dick saved for Dixon.

Read "I bought a Mountain" by Thomas Firbank. The story of a Snowdonia hill farm (Dyffryn Membyr on Glyder Fach)in the 1930s.

Firbank stresses the critical importance of the sheep to the economy of the farm, and in particular the annual crop of lambs. Dick's ewe would almost certainly have been pregnant, and her lamb would have had real value for Mr Dixon. Obviously AR would not have gone into such details!
