Back in 1930s Britain everyone lived near a train station.

Cars were still comparitively rare, even among middle class households, and were by no means reliable and the roads were nowhere near as good as they are today, even without the traffic congestion.

A train was far quicker and more reliable means of transport and with the network of small branch lines that lasted until Dr Beeching's axe in the 1960s, most places were within relatively short distance of a station though timetables had to be carefully consulted to make sure of the connections.
