My father was in the Middle East all his working life and until his parents died thought of their house as his "home", even though he had never lived there as they bought it after he had joined the army in WW2. After their deaths, he decided that it wasn't going to be his home and so he sold it. My mother's parents lived not far away but they were still living when he retired from the Middle East so my parents bought their own house.
Perhaps the Walkers consider their grandparents' house as the closest thing to "home"? I doubt Commander Walker could have bought a house on his naval income while educating four or five children privately unless there was extra money in the family but he may have hoped to inherit his parents' one.
