After spending some time on Google, these are my unhelpful conclusions as regards Cdr/Cmdr:

'Cmdr' and 'Lt-Cmdr' are the more common abbreviations in the US Army Air Force, US Navy and Canadian Navy. ('Cmdr' is also used in Star Trek)

In the British armed services 'Cdr' is more common than 'Cmdr' although both are used. However, some sort of definite guidance can be found by consulting the Guardian Style Guide which specifies 'Cmdr' as the correct abbreviation. This proves beyond doubt that 'Cdr' is the correct one :-)
