Nancy presumably meant Commodore 1st Class. The rank of Commodore was ... formally divided into those of the 1st class (with a Captain under them) and 2nd class (when commanding the ship themselves)
Peter, unless you are claiming that Nancy intended the sucessful captain to relinquish direct command of their boat to their mate, then Nancy meant Commodore 2nd Class.
