Over the years I've sometimes vaguely wondered how the S&As developed the signalling skills used in WH, as this profiency seemed absentin SD, even though signalling might have been useful on several occasions during those adventures.
The most 'existential' explanation is that they practiced their morse during the earlier part of WH, I think there is some mention of that in the text.Speculations about the usefullness of codes whilst at boarding school would, of course, not be allowed under the existential manifesto.
Nor is biographical context but I beleive that AR used a signalling system similar to that between the observatory and HH to organise fishing trips when he lived at Ludderburn?
Secret signalling methods seemed popular in children's fiction but hard work to implement, even harder to maintain motivation if you have a mobile phone to hand.
