Commander Walker doesn't seem to be passionate about the subject

Cdr Walker would have a Yeoman of Signals to carry out his orders.

As school naval cadets we were taught semaphore. However when we got near the real navy, it was treated with some derision for the following reasons given to us ISTR

Semaphore signalling is only for impressing admirals.
You try signalling with both hands on the flightdeck of a carrier in a Force 9 gale.
It is ever so useful on a dark night.

Hand signalling with flags was an emergency option when you had lost all power and you could not hoist flags. One handed morse was a better option invoking the Cdr Walker advice "One hand for yourself and one hand for the ship".
