It was obviously a big renovation project

I think John may have solved the problem. If plumbing fittings had to be replaced at Beckfoot, then anyone with any sense (and that certainly includes Mrs Blackett) would get the plumbers in before having the house redecorated, for obvious reasons. If Mrs B had done that, then the news would have spread on the grape vine up to Mrs Tyson but she would be somewhat behind with the news and might well lump together the two separate lots of work being done. That could be why she mentioned the plumbers, who had in fact gone by then. That also explains the frequent mention of plasterers - it occurs to me that the walls would not require replastering unless some structural alterations had taken place, eg pipes being removed/replaced. I think you've got it, John.

(Oh dear - here I am banging on about the Beckfoot plumbing. I've caught the disease . . . . Is there no cure??)
