It wasn't only on the water that there was less neurosis about safety and liability in those days.
Consider Mrs Blackett in WH - "You might take a run up the Matterhorn - Kanchenjunga, I mean...."
Six young children not her own. 2700 foot mountain. Midwinter. Starting quite late after rowing half the length of the lake. Heavy snow even at the bottom, with near certainty of ice higher up. No winter climbing equipment.
"Something always happens on Kanchenjunga" Nancy really would have been right that time!
