AR, when asked what his politics were said "Fishing"... I do think we ought to keep right off any other sort of politics.

The incident occurred when AR was being interrogated at Scotland Yard. I don't think that it can be taken as definitive proof that AR didn't have any interest in politics. The Politics of AR is potentially a rich subject of debate for TarBoard.

I support Peter H regarding his views about the duration of copyright and I quote part of his earlier post below.

As it happens, I would prefer 50 years - that seems long enough, and it is what the UK Copyright etc Act 1988 originally specified.

I may have skipped over some of the details, but I believe that the sequence of events that led to the change in the UK 1988 Act was roughly as follows.

  1. USA copyright holders petitioned the USA government for the 70 year duration
  2. USA government lobbied WIPO
  3. WIPO adopted 70 years protection as a target
  4. The European Commission decided to harmonise copyright duration with the WIPO norm and after an extensive process of consultation issued a Directive
  5. The UK Act was modified in line with the EC Copyright Directive.
