Steak and Kidney pie in a tin no problem with storage, Fray Bentos very popular brand, I believe still available, Pemmican corned beef also canned probably by the same company, other foods usually obtained and eaten that day i.e. tongue. or next day.
The weather was a lot cooler in Summer than in the States.
As to plastic wrapped meats this is to stop bloody mess in shopping bags.
Usually cut and packaged in store, moist because of plastic wrap, if left too long can become slimy in package.
Most meat when hung is not plastic wrapped.
