Certainly many first-person books began/begin with the narrator explaining the situation, how and why he/she got into the events, and so forth, probably since there wasn't any way to set up the story otherwise - especially in science fiction and fantasy. H.G. Wells and Edgar Rice Burroughs are obvious examples.
