The 1930s house I grew up in had a marble slab in the larder, a stone floor and a wire mesh window (presumably along the lines of the meat safe mesh. I remember being told by my grandfather, whose father was a grocer, that in summer slabs of ice would be delivered to customers two or three times a week. by Joy

I live in such a 1930's house now, although I do have a proper fridge and freezer as well!

My only experience of fridge-less life has been while camping - we stored fresh meat in a mesh box which we hung up in the shade of a tree, to keep it out of the sun and in the wind, and away from any marauding foxes (this was in England so no bears!) Milk was collected daily from the nearby farm.
