Good point, Pam - Heyerdahl sailed Kon Tiki for 101 days over 4,300 miles across the Pacific Ocean, but in 1947 - just too late to be mentioned in a Ransome book. Surely such a feat would have entranced the S, A and Ds. I wonder - if AR had decided to finish CN, could he have constructed a plot in which, inspired by Heyerdahl, the groups of children each built a raft out of whatever was at hand - the As and Ds at Beckfoot and the Swallows on WCI, then had to sail their craft from one end of the lake to the other. Perhaps the Coots, expert boat-builders themselves, could have been the neutral assistants, judges and 'lifeboat'. Villain? A new one - some local cynic who says it can't be done, and to ensure he is right he attempts sabotage of both rafts . . . but he reckons without the Coots . .
