The language situation is identical.

Well not quite. Conrad was born in Poland, left Poland as a 17 year old, learnt French in Paris, moved to England when he was 21, spent many of the next 20 years at sea and wrote his first book in English at the age of 32.

I was born in England, but Polish was my first language, When I was 10, I polished my reading skills by reading AR's books borrowed from the local library. I was 22 when I learnt to write intelligible English.

There is a flourishing Joseph Conrad Society, an interesting on-line biography and a reasonable Wikipedia entry.
