And more recently Tim Severin re-enacted all sorts of ancient voyages; I would have to go back to see if he was following in the footsteps of Jason & the Argonauts, St Brendan etc, and whether he claimed that he was proving the possibility that they were real people, not just legends?

Even if the Kon-Tiki voyage in a raft proved that the ancient proto-Polynesians could have done such a voyage, the modern re-enacters still know what they will find at the end of the voyage (Polynesian islands, America). The original voyagers (if they existed) were launching into the unknown!
