It may be an exception, but it is one of RotS's advantages. The immediacy of a first person narrative (thus automatically aiding the explanation of boaty terms to the self-confessed landlubber/narrator) along with the past tense for that sense of "what I did in my holidays".

Works for me! It would be a very different book if third-personed.
