I have similar concerns regarding the copper mine at the Gulch in PIGEON POST. Simply putting a scrap of paper in a forked stick "claiming" this place somehow would not be adequate, as that land, and its mineral value, belongs to SOMEONE, or some legal entity, yet our friends seem to think they can just go up there and start digging out this copper. Now, to follow the idea of other arrangements being made behind the scenes between the natives, perhaps CF did get himself and Timothy hired to work this mine for the actual owner, but we of course never see or even hear of this transaction.

In WINTER HOLIDAY, CF did mention this kind of adult transaction as he went to prepare for them to trek to the "north pole" as he said even the NP belongs to somebody, so he had to get permission and presumably the keys to have that place unlocked for the explorers when they eventually got there. As to how much money was involved, if any, of course our friends and we readers do not need to be involved.

Also in WH, when Nancy came down with her mumps, Mrs. Blackett went immediately to Mrs. Jackson at Holly Howe to "make arrangements" for Peggy to stay with them for the duration. She even went on over to Mrs. Dixon to make similar arrangements for the D's to continue their stay at that place. In this situation, she was acting IN LOCO PARENTIS since the adult Cullums were not there. As to whether the Callum parents reimbused Mrs. Blackett for whatever she paid Mrs. Dixon for that extended stay or not, that again is not our concern. All we saw was that Mrs. Blackett did go to Mrs. Dixon regarding the D's extension to their visit.

Just as the North Pole belongs to somebody, so did Wild Cat Island. I have to wonder if "arrangements" were made with that owner to permit these campers to make use of that place.

In SWALLOWDALE, when John sailed his wounded ship to the boat builders along with CF, we all understood that CF would bear the cost of any repairs necessary. When the boat builder originally gave his estimate as when the SWALLOW would be again available, that schedule was felt to be much too late. At this point CF took the boat builder aside and in a private conversation that we can only guess so additional funds were offered for a more speedy finished product, they returned with a very much accelerated schedule. We don't know how much changed hands, and officially that was not our concern, but an adult-to-adult transaction of some sort was made.

It is not that the "natives" do not exist; they do. It is just that a good bit of those interactions among them are simply not of any concern to our main characters, and therefore should not be of any particular concern of ours. But as adults, we do wonder about these things, like where does Beckfoot get its water, especially during the very dry spell in Pigeon Post, as the Amazon River did not have hardly any flow at all, and certainly not enough to power any ram pump. Oops, there I go again... sorry 'bout that...
