The Heliograph (sun) was used into the 20th century for signalling, and Aldis Lamps with shutters at night. Re the vulnerability of fixed ships to enemy attack, in WWII German weather ships (off Iceland?) were targeted and seized for their Enigma machines and codebooks.

In PP (Chapter XVIII), Nancy is rather sheepish (for her) when Squashy Hat comes across them looking at his tin of paint. Peggy & Roger signal ‘like windmills …. for hours and hours’ but Nancy, John & Dick don’t look at them!
