They fire a 1.00pm (13.00) gun at Edinburgh Castle each day. The story is they changed from a 12.00 gun to save on gun-powder! As a signal to ships in the port, it's not that accurate. Sound travels quite slowly thats why the dropping ball is better. They have a ball signal at Greenwich though there is not much in the way of shipping at Londo to see it nowadays.
Expanding the topic, all those who need accurate times, will soon be stymied when digital radio takes over from analogue, they can't broadcast an instant pip. We'll have to fall back on the speaking clock, if they still have one!
