I agree with Owen- much of the appeal of O'Brian's work is the perfect world he creates (or re-creates). (I admit to being a Georgette Heyer fan for the same reason!) In addition, the dual characters allow for more interest, as Stephen especially is a very complex creature.

I felt that the Master and Commander movie portrayed Jack's character and the world that they live in pretty well. Stephen was quite simplified alhough still enjoyable.
