This was a fascinating TV programme PeterH. AR would surely have written a good book introduction to any account of the voyage.
One can never be sure how much bias is put into such programme.
A few items do stand out with those you have described
The resilience of his wife.
The staunchness of his closest friend.
The generosity of Robin Knox Johnson in donating his winner's prize to a fund for the the welfare of the Crowhurst family.
Moitessier, the French contender, sailed on to Tahiti - one and a half times round the world. I am not sure if this distance has ever been exceeded in a nonstop voyage.
