Funny, I recall when I was in western Canada in November 1978 there were Guy Fawkes celebrations going on - Ed, you need to head Nort-West !
As far as the July thing is concerned - I've never really understood why the rebel colonials still want to remember the day they were expelled from the Empire and as a result suffered from having to play baseball instead of cricket and were not allowed to be a pretty pink on the map any more.
I regret to say that inflation and trans-Atlantic influences seem to have pushed the once-universal "Penny for the Guy" out in favour of the new-fangled Trick or Treat a few days earlier.
