"Grog" is ground up fired clay that is added to a clay body (while it is still wet and plastic) to give the final product more strength and less shrinkage. It also allows the piece to dry without cracking or warping. It is used a lot in sculptural forms and architectural tiles because of their thickness - it allows the water of plasticity to evaporate. Finely crushed grog is sometimes used in throwing bodies to help the piece stand up.

Just don't try to drink it - its rather gritty!
