But so there have always been. I think it perfectly reasonable to quote Cicero to this effect. Or we could read Dickens about the life of the urban poor 150 years ago. Or my mother's experiences teaching in the London Docklands area in the Depression of the 1930s.

My niece who teaches in a remedial school in the most disadvantaged area of Birmingham is by no means as pessimistic as this thread is implying.

As for 'any newspaper' - has anybody EVER read a newspaper article about a subject with which they were familiar and found it accurate?? My experience is that even if you write it yourself the editor will alter it to introduce inaccuracies!
