I think American style school graduations are becoming more common in the UK. Most schools would have a prom type thing although it wouldn't be as big a deal and would probably be more alcoholic. Rather than cap and gown type affairs though you'd get a special assembly and a variety of awards serious or not.

My school also had an annual presnetation evening at which we picked up our exam certificates. The results come out in August, about 6 weeks after you officially finish school and we got our certiicates in december by which time msot of us had been at Uni for a term.
