An alternative thought, however, is that in SD the GA might simply have preferred to go for a pleasant drive on a sunny afternoon in a (hired?) horse drawn carriage, than to be driven in Rattletrap, which anyway would have been a tight fit unless Mrs Blackett herself had driven (most unladylike).

We know that the GA did not like to be driven above 10 mph anyway (PM) so that the distance covered in the carriage would not have been much less than the car.
