This was facilitated by a method called double declutching.

Shortened to "double clutching" in the United States. I was taught the technique when I learned to drive - back when you could not take your examination in an automatic transmission machine, and synchromesh wasn't always quite so synchro, but generally more likely to be useful when downshifting or going into reverse.
