The main point about BS is that Dorothea made her imagination work in a way which transcends anything which anybody else did in any of the books (except perhaps John's innate seamanship in WD) She used it to understand and finally to resolve a situation which was becoming really critical - potentially even terminal.
(Although I sometimes wonder how the interview in Mr Farland's study would have turned out even if the photograph had been a failure. Owdon and Strakey's evidence was shaky under Mr Farland's questionning - and if the owner of the Cachalot had come in at that point....????)
