My SD3 is just above the tree line (another plus point is the wooded nature of the lower approaches). The main stream bears right and there is a really big waterfall and steep rock face - similar to the Webb drawing of hauling up the baggage. The footpath on the left hand side (as you go up) takes a much higher line round this feature and crosses a branch stream (Crook Beck) between two very noticeable boulders before crossing quite a boggy area, past a disused mine (inside this is more like AR's interior drawing), and then crosses the main stream on a newish footbridge. SD3 is beyond this footbridge. The path turns eastwards to meet the main miner's track.

Because the footpath doesn't go through SD3, and because the main miner's track is high above SD3 and on the same side as the cave, it is actually quite a secret valley not visible at all from the miners track (both tracks are easily seen in the Google map reference in another post, which has SD3 at its centre). And of course, in AR's time and the 1930's, there would be far less tracks around. I can't see from my 1925 1" OS map if the track I've described above even existed. If not, SD3 would be completely hidden.

Now I'm curious about where SD3.1 is!

Rob
