The problem of night sailing in familiar waters is seldom connected to locating major land forms.
The problem is seeing things which float in the water, or are barely visible above it such as logs, and low rocks like the chickens that surround the hen. Visibliity at night is
tricky. Moonlight, starlight, and the light polution emanating from everyones
electric lights make the modern night far from dark. In the stories, people use candles and don't have large floodlights shooting out over their farmyards.
Without light polution and on a cloudy night the lake would be a dark place indeed.
The technology to use would be radar or night scopes. Neither are common on thirteen foot boats.
