Well, Pete fired the camera and Bill fired the flash; the time delay between the two would have given Owdon and Strakey ample time to turn around. I can't recall offhand, but ISTR Dick's instructions to the cameraman were to open the shutter as soon as he heard something and close it when the flash had died down. Also, the flash tray was spark-driven. Perhaps it didn't catch the first time (like some cigarette lighters). I always detonated my flash powder via a hot fusible wire, thus minimizing misfires.
