I always accepted it as "real" and was very surprised when I first read Christina Hardyment's book.

I think that Hardyment, like the rest of us, in trying to second guess AR does sometimes arrive at conclusions that we may consider wrong.

Personally I think the change in local attitude between CC and B6 is very surprising. The D&G's going from being heroes to villains in a short space of time is stretching the imagination.
This would be on par for national newspaper reporting where they love to build people up to knock them down - but I find AR's transition difficult to comprehend if he really knew the area and the people. It flies against all the Norfolk peoples closeness propounded in CC.
Therefore I think B6 sits at least as awkwardly as does GN in the series.
