'American Cloth' is indeed a form of plasticised fabric. I remember my parents used it as a tablecoth- in Switzerland it was (and in some cases still is) called 'toile Americaine'.

Rugby is a kind of high school, although unlike the American kind it is private and fee paying. Ironically such schools have always been called 'public schools' although they are anything but.
