That's very true about the lead obstructing passage forward, especially under full main. Also that the two legs of the whip tackle, when the main was fully set and the whip block close to the deck, would be at a horrific mechanical disadvantage unless the working end was belayed at the shrouds --which it's clearly not. Could it be that we're seeing the lift in that illustration, too --the lift would remain out of the way where the halyard would be a nuisance, and would remain high enough that the legs of the tackle could be a ways apart and not hinder the mechanical advantage. I stand by my assertion that a lift whip should be better confined, to save heads as well as brightwork, but that doesn't mean lifts are, or that Goblin's/Nancy's lift was/is.

Ergo, could we not be seeing enough detail to tell that John is grabbing a different line than the one he appears to be grabbing?
