Pigeon Post was illustrated by Mary E. Shepherd, with some Ransome insets. Our (50s) SA didn't have any illustrations other than chapter heads, tailpieces, and the map of Wildcat Island inside, the Lake on the cover. All were by Helene Carter. My notes on the Lippincott WH I saw are that she seems to have used Ransome's illustrations as a basis for hers. As to why she stopped, perhaps Ransome disliked her style, and had become powerful enough with Lippincott to get her replaced. Certainly if, as Wayne Hammond has noted (s2m-list posting), he replaced the original "On the Crosstrees" in WDMTGTS because he thought he'd made John look too old, he wouldn't approve of "the young adult look". Note also that subsequent American releases were published by MacMillan, with AR's illustrations.
