I suppose we can always daydream we have a reasonably comprehensive railway system as we did up to the end of the 1950's.
The problem is that many diversionary routes have been closed and lifted since that time. So that when a major renewal has to take place than there is little option than to close the line.
The Amazons journey from the Lakes to Pin Mill in SW would be more difficult than it was in the 1930's if they had chosen to go cross country rather than via London.
