I have a friend who works for HarperCollins Canada who publish JRR Tolkien's books in Canada. He was telling me that Tolkien's books sold in incredible numbers after the Lord of the Rings films became a hit.
Tolkien purists have often complaqined about plot ommissions and changes, casting decisions etc. but the truth is that the films brought many new readers to Tolkien.
The Lion , the Witch and the Wardrobe film produced a similar but lesser bounce for CS Lewis and I expect that The Golden Compass will do the same for Philip Pullman's books.
A well produced, and much more importantly, well publicised film of Ransome's book(s) could produce many more readers of Ransome, no matter what liberties are taken with the casting plot or setting.
